Building in Motion: Aesthetics of Construction Sites

@ Behrang Fakharian, Toronto, Ontario 2018

At Theme Architecture & Planning, we find unique beauty in the construction process itself. Job sites are dynamic environments where raw materials and equipment come together in a choreography that resembles a scene from a theatre. Concrete surfaces, CLT panels, steel beams, and the hum of machinery create an ever-changing stage that reflects the transition from concept to reality. The interplay of light on unfinished surfaces and the skeletal forms of buildings taking shape remind us of the artistry behind every structure.

Following the construction methods and challenges up close is not just part of the job. It is a source of inspiration. Each challenge offers an opportunity to rethink, refine, and improve architectural details. Whether it’s adjusting for unexpected conditions or enhancing the function and aesthetics of a space, these moments during construction allow us to continuously evolve our design approach. The problem-solving required on-site pushes us to innovate in ways that wouldn’t be possible in the studio alone.

This blend of art and problem-solving enriches our architectural vision, allowing us to approach each project with renewed creativity. As we monitor every stage of construction, we gain deeper insights into how our designs interact with the materials, tools, and craftsmanship that bring them to life. These ongoing reflections help us create architecture that is both beautiful and practical, grounded in the realities of construction yet always reaching for something creative. Here are a few photos captured by our principal, Behrang Fakharian, during his visits to the job sites in Toronto between 2018 and 2024.
